NEW DELHI: Sanju Samson’s excellent performance in the IPL as a batsman and Rajasthan Royals’ captain has earned him a place in India’s T20 World Cup squad. He secured the number two wicketkeeper-batter position behind Rishabh Pant, beating strong contenders like KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan.
Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir thinks this is the perfect time for Samson to make an impact on international stage. He wants to see the 29-year-old not only playing but also winning games for India.According to Gambhir, Samson has gained enough experience and must now maximize his full potential by registering unforgettable performances.
“Now that you’ve been picked in the World Cup team; you’ve got an opportunity-that kind of one where if you get a chance, you must ensure that we start winning games for India. There is that sort of experience of playing international cricket. You are no longer a beginner that would keep waiting,” Gambhir told SportsKeeda.
“You have had some taste of international cricket and done well at IPL, so now comes your chance to play World Cup. So with luck, at this point let’s just hope Sanju shows us what he can do. When you excel in International cricket particularly such as the World cup everybody sees it,” This was stated by Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir also prays that if Samson gets his chance at T20 WorldCup later on, batting will be positively influenced by his Captaincy experience.
“Just quality of player. I don’t need to see much. In five minutes I can understand what type of player he is,” said Gambhir “You’re always growing mentally and skill-wise too otherwise if you become stagnant then you won’t be lasting very long”. The good thing is be it fitness, power-hitting or keeping or captaincy…he hasn’t made any mistake. He starts accessing through captaincy, he judges better, reads better. That is when you also become a good batter. I think if Samson gets the chance, his captaincy will be seen in the form of batting in the T20 World Cup.”
