In a much-anticipated press conference, Democratic President Jim Himes and 16 other top Democrats are calling on Joe Biden to discontinue his reelection bid in 2024. The call comes after Himes stopped an internal debate and caused widespread concern about the possibility of Trump’s rival within the Republican Party.
President Biden held a press conference where he responded to journalists’ concerns at the end of NATO Summit meeting, which was held on Thursday night, in Washington D.C. Despite mounting pressure, Biden has expressed determination to continue running and argued that he is fit for position of the president now and through four more years.
Jim Himes from Connecticut district voiced his concerns shortly after the news conference. On social media platforms as well as elsewhere, he posted that American democracy was hanging by a thread.
Biden’s campaign has been marred by age-related criticism and backlash over his performance.

While there have been numerous lawmakers expressing unease about Biden staying in office while others have categorically backed him, here is a list of those who directly called upon him not to seek another term in office.
Senator Peter Welch: “For the good of the country, I call on President Biden to withdraw from the race,” Vermont Senator wrote an op-ed piece for Washington Post. Welch became first known Democrat who asked for President’s resignation. United States Senate Democrat
Eric Sorenson Representative: “It is more important than ever that our neighbors have a presidential candidate who will deliver a positive vision for everyone in this country,” Sorenson representing Illinois state published through X website .
Representative Scott Peters: “I am asking President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race,” said Peters. “The stakes are high and we are on a path to failure.” My heart tells me it is time I speak out above my love and loyalty for America!” .
Representative Jim Himes: According to Himes from Connecticut district, the 2024 elections will determine the future of American democracy as nation must put forth its best foot in order to combat Trump’s MAGA authoritarianism. Joe Biden is not any more.
Greg Stanton Representative: “It’s time for our nominee to step down and continue making progress on all our shared priorities for a better America,” said Stanton of Arizona who represents one of the swing districts.
Representative Ed Case: Keys from Hawaii stated, “My guidepost is what path forward is best for our country.” “I don’t think President Biden should run again as president.”
Brad Snyder represents: Illinois’ Snyder said in a statement, “I love President Biden. I am forever grateful for his leadership and service to our country. However, now is the time for President Biden to heroically pass the torch to a new generation of leadership who will guide us into the future he has created. Giving us the ability to pursue that.”
According to Scholten of Michigan, “For the sake of democracy, I think it is time for him to quit his presidential race and allow another person to take over.”
As per Blumenauer from Oregon: “Should the president run for re-election? Not just to remain as president a bit longer but also save democracy,” stated Blumenauer, who represents a district in Oregon. “This is up to the president and first lady, but I hope they will reach the same conclusion that I and many others have reached: President Biden should not be the Democratic nominee for president.”
Ryan from New York posted on social media that “Joe Biden is a patriot but no longer our strongest candidate against Trump.” He won his seat with a majority vote in the general election some months later.
New Jersey’s Sherrill said in an interview: “If President Biden does care about America’s future as much as I believe he does, then I would ask him today to announce that he will not stand for re-election and be willing to guide us through choosing a new nominee.” In She added.
Smith’s statement refers to President Biden when he says “President Biden must immediately terminate his campaign for re-election and release his delegates so that a new Presidential nominee can be chosen by the party at their National Convention”. “The president’s debate performances have been horrific, and there are now too many Americans who do not see him as fit for even one four-year term,” commented Smith from Washington.
Craig said she doesn’t think Trump will effectively campaign against Donald Trump. If last week’s debate in Atlanta was any indication of what Trump is like,” Craig conclude.
Illinois’ Quigley believes that risk or he himself may become “a complete disaster” if Biden stays on.
Moulton (D-MA) praised Joe Biden while speaking on local radio but called upon him to follow George Washington’s example and step aside so that young leaders can emerge against Donald Trump.
Southern Arizona’s liberal, Grijalva, reportedly told Parami News that Biden “should end his campaign” because “this is a good opportunity.”
Lloyd Doggett Representative: Doggett, a House member from a safe Democratic district in Texas, was the first congressional Democrat to call for Biden to step down. “President Biden continues to trail Democratic senators significantly in key states and trails Donald Trump in most polls,” Doggett said in a statement. “I had hoped this debate would provide Some motivation to change that.”
