Mohammed Shami, India’s leading fast bowler, has had numerous setbacks in his career. Even though he is India’s highest wicket taker in last three ODIs world cups, his private life has been a subject of scrutiny most of the time.
The 33-year-old fast bowler from Uttar Pradesh has been divorced by Hasin Jahan, who filed a FIR against him for domestic violence and match fixing.
But Umesh Kumar revealed on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast that at some point during this crisis Shami Mi once thought of committing suicide as well; he was however exonerated from these charges after rigorous investigations.
This disclosure points to the kind of pressure cricket players go through while grappling with personal and profession-life-related issues.
“During that phase, he fought everything. He lived with me at my place. But when rigging allegations with Pakistan broke out and led to investigation that night, he went down. He said I could bear everything but Accusations of betrayal of my country won’t be borne,” Umesh said on the podcast.
That same day there are also reports that he almost did something great at midnight. When I woke up to drink water it was already 4 o’clock in the morning. I was going into the kitchen and saw him standing on the balcony. That day I knew we live on the 19th floor as what happened then was I believe his longest night ever in cricket life.
Shami who is currently recuperating from Achilles tendon injury and surgery posted a photo of himself training intensely in the nets with a caption which clearly depicts his determination to come back strong and make a huge impact for Indian team.
“Ball in hand, mind obsessed, ready to turn the game around.” “#shami #mdshami #mdshami11,” read Shami’s social media message
In November last year, Shami played his last competitive match when India played Australia in the final of ICC World Cup 2023 at Ahmedabad which unfortunately lost.
In this tournament Shami finished with 24 wickets in 7 games which included three five-wicket hauls, making him the highest wicket taker.
