On Monday, The Proteas began its ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign with an emphatic six-wicket win against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi. It is generally agreed that the striking show from their bowlers proved the turning point for South Africa in this must win game. Anrich Nortje’s career-best T20I 4-12, the most economical four wickets haul at Men’s T20 World Cup of all time was a testament to his sheer brilliance on the day.
Nortje, who has had a difficult Indian Premier League season, put all concerns about his form aside with figures of 4-12 which are the most economical four wicket-haul ever at men’s t20 world cup. This performance was instrumental in dismantling Sri Lankan batting line up and they managed only 77 runs which were their lowest ever total in this competition.
South African captain Aiden Markram lauded Nortje during the post-match presentation for his unbelievable performance and unwavering trust that fast bowler has built within members of this team. “We didn’t worry too much about him but it was a massive day for him I reckon mentally, more than anything,” said Markram. “He is loved to bits in our changeroom and the boys are very happy and proud of him. Hopefully kick-starts a wonderful world cup for him.”
The captain admitted difficulty in adapting to different surfaces throughout the competition but emphasized how important it would be for everyone involved to play according to conditions presented by each pitch. “It was a tough one from a batting point of view,” he admitted. “We try as much as we can to take the pitch out of it. We can take some learnings from it, and we are experienced. Lots of different conditions as we move around, fortunately we have our next two here so we know what’s coming but its important that we adapt as we go forward.”
South Africa plays Australia on October 20th at the same venue. They will be looking to build on their impressive start and solidify their position as one of the tournament favourites.
