LONDON: Nigel Farage, who helped lead the push for Brexit in Britain, said on Monday that he would run as a candidate in the next elections and would be leading Reform, a new right-wing party in a significant blow to PM Rishi Sunak.
When Sunak’s conservatives are already trailing Labour Party by wide margins in the opinion polls, this unexpected change of stance by former TV host Farage will tackle Conservatives for support from right leaning voters at such time.
He had earlier stated that he would not join the July 4 race to help Donald Trump contest this year’s US election. This was however; reversed because he felt bad about himself for not standing up for people who were fed up with politics and always had his back.
“I’ll tell you what we are going to be an opposition voice, and I’ve done it before; I’ll do it again; I’ll surprise everybody,” Farage announced at a press conference where he claimed Labor is going to win but wanted Reform to be its main challenger. He mentioned challenges of public services including health care and roads as reasons why there should be “political revolt” against Britain because nothing works anymore here.
He has never won in seven attempts but still remains among the most powerful politicians of his era putting successive Prime Ministers under pressure to take stricter stances towards Europe and immigration. Mr. Farage’s opponents have called some remarks made by him racist. In the course of Brexit campaign, there was a picture showing migrants lined up on one side of it, while Break Point was written above them which rested just behind him. Last month Farage stirred controversy when he said Muslims did not share British values.
