Supreme Court On Monday, the Uttar Pradesh government directed all shopkeepers and restaurant owners to place their names and other details in places where no movement is allowed. Kanwar Yatra It’s organized.
The Supreme Court has said that police from Uttar Pradesh cannot force shop owners to have their names displayed. But they may ask them for food display only.
“Do not pressurize shopkeepers during Kanwar Yatra to put their names outside of restaurants,” stated the Supreme Court.
The order came on a petition filed against it by TMC MP Mahua Moitra, among others, which was being heard by a bench consisting of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatt.
Besides this, the Supreme Court also indicated notices on Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi governments; a group of state governments claimed that the decision violated constitutional provisions of State Governments; were opposed to secularism in any form while filing petitions about its implementation at different levels throughout India .
On July 20th, the government of UP ordered food shops along the Kanwar route to display the name boards of their owners. The opposition parties in the state questioned this directive pointing out religious discrimination.
Before July 26, the Supreme court asked for clarification from UP government over an order as next hearing is scheduled on that same date.
