Gautam Gambhir, the newly-appointed coach of India, held his first press conference on Monday where he touched on some key points. In particular, he focused on workload management for premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah whom he described as a ‘rare bowler.’
India tour Sri Lanka beginning with a T20 International in Pallekele this Saturday and conclude with three ODIs and two more T20 Internationals at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
“Workload management is important for someone like Jasprit (Bumrah) like I’ve said before. There is only one rare bowler like him everyone would wish to have. You want him to play crucial matches. That’s why it’s important that not only fast bowlers but all of them are put through workload management,” Gambhir clarified during the presser.
However, Bumrah has consistently shown his worth within the Indian squad. His excellent showings at the ODI World Cup 2023 and incredible figures at the T20 World Cup when they won it all just highlight how much he means to their bowling outfit.
In addition, Gambhir made a general point about managing workloads among quicks but added a different spin for batters.
“If you are batting well as a batter then you may as well go ahead and play every format. Rohit has retired from T20I cricket now so those two will be playing two formats henceforth. So most probably they should be there for most of the matches,” Gambhir stated.
This is reflected in how coach talks about team strategy while taking over charge and preparing for forth coming series against Sri Lanka.
