Subianto took the oath from the Koran in a ceremony attended by lawmakers and international dignitaries, and thousands of supporters cheered in the capital.

Subianto has previously faced accusations of human rights abuses during Indonesia’s military dictatorship.
Subianto, 73, is a rival to the former president Joko Widodo and ran against him in the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections. However, Widodo Subianto appointed him defense minister after his re-election, and the two sides remained aligned despite political differences.
