In his first podcast interview, Patrick Duffy sit down with his ex step by step Co-stars Staci Keanan and Christine Lakin return for the Keanan and Lakin Give You Déjà Vu podcast. The conversation covers Duffy’s illustrious TV career, touching on his iconic roles in “Dallas” and “The Man from Atlantis,” before delving into the much-loved “90s situation comedy step by step.
Describing the show as “a new era for The Brady Bunch,” Duffy, 75, reflected on the series, which featured his character Frank Lambert, Susan SummersCarol Lambert navigates life with their blended family of six children.
Susan Summers first impressions
Duffy fondly recalls first meeting the late Summers when they were cast as Frank and Carol without even auditioning. The chemistry between them was instant, leading to a dynamic on-screen relationship that became the cornerstone of the show.
While “Step by Step” is considered a wholesome family situation comedy, Keenan noted that some viewers have retrospectively labeled the show “sexual.” At first, she was surprised by this observation. “I thought, ‘What are they talking about? Our show is a very wholesome and sweet family show,” she admits. But after rewatching some episodes, she began to understand where that perception might be coming from.
Duffy touches on this in a humorous way, explaining the underlying chemistry between Frank and Carol. “The two families came together because we met on a whim on vacation and got married two days after meeting,” he said. “It’s not that we’re all good at poker.”
He added that the show deftly captures the couple’s romantic spark. “When we got the chance, we wanted to go upstairs, but we couldn’t because our house was full of kids. They wrote letters…and that’s what we did,” Duffy shared with a laugh.

Step by Step may have ended in 1998, but its charm and humor still resonate with fans today. For Duffy, it remains a highlight in a career filled with iconic characters, and his memories of working with Summers and the rest of the cast are testament to the show’s magic.
