Munawar Faruqui The stand-up comedian faced a backlash after allegedly commenting on the Konkani people conflict. In his defense, Faruqui released a public Apologizestating that he never meant to offend anyone. As such even though he apologized, the situation soon became worse and it also attracted more attention which ended up being political. In an apology video, the Lock Upp winner clarified that his words were not intended as they appeared; instead they were part of “crowd work,” or live improvisation with audiences during performances. “Hi friends, I want to clarify something. Some time ago there was a show where I did not laugh at my own joke but participated in crowd work and had conversations with them,” said Faruqui. Moreover, he added that all participants in this joke loved the performance and its audience consisted of various nationalities.
Nonetheless, some individuals hurt by Farooqui’s statements. While others felt that as a funnyman he had no intentions to inflict pain on them. “We see them popping up online and then realize what is wrong,” he said. Finally, Faruqui regretted any offense caused and apologized for it. He subtitled it in Marathi meaning “Konkanis love you so much; sorry.” Nevertheless, this was just another controversy in Farooqui’s eventful existence since his debut. When at one of his stand-up shows he made fun of Talloha boy who commented how Konkani people would rather say Mumbai than Taloja when asked about their place of living, saying “Ye Konkani log ch***ya banate hain sabko” (Konkani people make fools of others).
On the professional side, Munawar Faruqui is causing a stir in the Indian entertainment field. The comedian has been performing live stand-up shows across India since he won Bigg Boss 17 and his Lock Upp became a hit.
