New Delhi: Death toll from building collapse sohana village The fire intensity in Mohali district rose to two on Sunday as the body of a man was recovered from the rubble.
The incident occurred on Saturday night when the multi-storey building collapsed, trapping at least five people under the rubble.
Divisional Magistrate Damandeep Kaur confirmed that the man’s body had been recovered, but the identity of the deceased has not yet been ascertained.
Earlier, a 20-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh was rescued from the rubble in a critical condition and was later declared dead. Despite being rushed to hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
The rescue operation continued throughout the night with the help of multiple excavators, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army and state rescue teams. Medical teams and ambulances were deployed to the scene to assist the injured.
Authorities have launched an investigation and booked two property owners in connection with the collapse. Initial reports indicate the incident may have been caused by construction work and excavation on a neighboring plot.
The Western Command of the Indian Army in a social media post praised the prompt and coordinated efforts of the Army, NDRF and state teams to clear the debris, with engineering contingents and machinery working tirelessly to reach the basement.
Meanwhile, local hospitals in Mohali, including Civil Hospital, Fortis Hospital, Max Hospital and Sohana Hospital, are on alert to treat the injured.
Commissioner of Police Gaurav Yadav inspected the spot and assured that a multi-agency rescue operation is on.
