New Delhi: After weeks of suspense, the Congress party finally announced its candidate on Friday Ameti and Ray Barelli Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha constituency.
Rahul Gandhi Rae Bareli has been fielded while Kishori Lal Sharma will be contested by Amethi.
The Congress is contesting 17 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh as part of a seat-sharing agreement with the Samajwadi Party (SP) and has announced candidates for all seats except Amethi and Rae Bareli.
Gandhi Fort
Ray Bareilly was also a bastion of the National Congress Party. From 1967 to 1977, the seat was held by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was appointed to the Rajya Sabha from 2004 to 2024, Sonia Gandhi.
Rahul will file nomination from the constituency on Friday. He will contest against sitting BJP MP Dinesh Pratap Singh. He was also elected by the party in 2019.
Singh lost to Sonia by 167,000 votes.
On being re-elected to the fray as Ray Bareilly, Singh said: “I assure the nation that the farewell of Ray Bareilly ‘Nakli’ Gandhi is certain. The ‘lotus’ of the BJP will surely bloom, And Congress will fail, and around Raleigh, they will all lose.
Cuts approaching deadline
The announcement comes on the last day for filing of nominations in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The two constituencies will go to polls on May 20.
Rahul’s defeat by Irani in the 2019 polls in Amethi, once considered the Congress’s “pocket constituency,” was seen as a major blow to the party’s national prestige. Irani won the seat by about 55,000 votes.
Rahul represented Amethi in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2019. Participated in elections here in 1999.
Rahul currently represents Wayanad in the Lok Sabha, while Irani is vying for a new term from Amethi.
