In the December players’ auction last year IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders bought Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc for Rs 24.75 crore setting a new auction price record.
They clinched their third IPL title by beating Sunrisers Hyderabad with an emphatic eight-wicket win in the final at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai on May 26th.
Sunrisers Hyderabad was all out at 113 runs that were the lowest total of all in any IPL championship match when Australia’s top left-arm pacer Starc became prominent again taking two wickets for only fourteen runs and this attested his position as one of best bowlers of world’s most profitable T20 tournament.
Among Starc’s two standout performances was his match-winning 3-34 against the same side during the first playoff game.
He also took home a Man of Match award.
At the moment, there is a video that is trending online where Starc is talking about getting less money after KKR won than what he had earned from being bought in that same competition.
The video shows Starc saying, “The IPL Final presentation didn’t start until midnight & basically killed the vibe. Then cheques for winning team came over, it had INR 20CR price. Angkrish (Raghuvanshi) just looked at that and said – Huh! It’s not even what you got paid.”
This was KKR’s second title win in Chennai since they won their inaugural trophy in 2012.
Starc then stole attention when he dismissed Abhishek Sharma (two runs) who had been hitting some good form and his delivery pitched on middle and took off bail from top of off stump.
Starting off poorly, Sunrisers’ top order batsmen didn’t show great performance as Travis Head went back to pavilion without scoring any run caught behind by Vaibhav Arora, an Indian fast bowler.
With Starc taking another wicket, the opposition was left at 47-4 within seven overs.
