Hartalika Teej 2024: Meaning
Khatalika is an important religious festival for Hindus. This festival is most enjoyed by the married Hindu women who themselves are the flag bearers for the success of this festival in every generation. This occasion is entirely dedicated to Maa Gauri or Parvati mata the wife of their god shiva. Sahasrabhuja Gauri puja is perfumed by all the women after stringent fasting from dawn to dusk. Married women keep fasts for the happiness and welfare of their husbands while the unmarried women keep a fast to pray to Gauri Mata so that they can get married with the man of their choice.
There are 3 Teej observances in a year namely, Hariyali Teej, Kajari Teej and now Hartalika Teej. This festival is celebrated with great pomp and zeal throughout the country. Every region or city has its own customs and practices and observes this festival accordingly. In South India, Hartalika Teej is called Gowri Habba.
Hartalika Teej 2024: Story
Among the Hindu festivals, this occasion is observed in Indian tradition by women and is called Hartalika Teej. Harta means theft or robbery basically of a woman whereas Aalika is a female companion or Sakhi. It is said that once, Lord Vishnu sent Naraj Ji to convince King Himavat (father of Goddess Parvati) and the proposal was accepted, however, Goddess Parvati felt disgusted upon learning about it and told her Sakhi that she wanted to marry Lord Shiva and not Lord Vishnu.
Unlike the traditional methods of marriage, she did like how of custom have formality, as some of her friends from the woman part of the society advised her to leave her father’s house and even did wise convince her to fast severely to propitiate Lord Shiv, to have him as a husband. She did likewise, and dwelt in the woods, and underwent rigorous penance and her wish was realized when, after witnessing her devotion to him, Lord Shiva made her his wife. This is nothing but a dream, an illusion caused by God Vishnu so that Dea Parvati will pray harder until she gets the husband she wants.
Hartalika Teej 2024: Ceremony
- Women wake up at the break of dawn and take a holy bath.
- Wash out the entire house but pay close attention to the shrine.
- Bring the images of Krishna and Shiva and light the diya with ghee.
- Arrange flowers and shringara items for Mata Parvati’s idol and drape her with clothes and ornaments.
- Prepare Bhog Prasad – Rice Kheer, Aalo Ki sabji & Poori, Semolina halwa & Raita.
- In the night after finishing all the work offer all the bhog prasad to Mata Parvati and Sri Shiva.
- Narrate the Vrat Katha and offer Aarti.
- The fast is completed and the bhog prasad is handed out to all the members of the household in the evening.
- Bow down to the feet of the elders in the family or in laws and take their blessings.
