Pawan Kumar Chamling, a five-time ex-chief minister of Sikkim and senior leader of the Self-Defense Forces, has lost his parliamentary constituency seats for both Pokrok Kamlang and Nanjibang where he contested. In his home district Namchi’s Poklok Kamrang assembly constituency, Chamlin, who is an eight-term MLA, lost to Bhoj Raj Rai of SKM by a margin of 3,063 votes.
He was defeated by Raju Basnet of SKM in Namcheybung by 2,256 votes margin in the assembly constituency. In this election Basnett got 7,195 votes while Chamlin received 4,939 votes. Mr. Chamling had been the Chief Minister of Sikkim from 1994 to 2019 for twenty-five years.
After the former chief minister loses horribly he will be absent from the Sikkim Assembly for nearly four decades.
Like Basu whom he idolizes, from 1994 to 2019 Pawan Kumar Chamling led his party to power five times.
Not any small achievement for a politician who became Yengangke Village Chairman in 1982.
Chamlin’s first successful political demonstration came in 1985 when he was elected from his home district Damtang located at South Sikkim District on ticket of then chief minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari-led Sikkim Sangram Parishad.
Besides winning elections frequently, chamlin was famous for his oratory skills (additionally). Even though he had only passed matriculation as proof of his educational qualifications, he wrote much prose and poetry prolifically in Nepali language.
