Upon returning from India’s First Chess Olympiad Master Gujrathi’s season that had so much to show for itself, A participated at the 10th Ugar Gashimov Memorial Chess Super Championship held in Azerbaijan but decided not to defend the title, as time was allocated to meet Prime Minister Modi the Thursday.
Gujrathi performed better than their fellow countrymen in Arjun Eligueth held in Azerbaijan last year.
He is a member of the Indian men’s team comprising D Gukesh, R Ragnananda with Arjun clinching the historic Open Olympiad Gold medal for team India.
Gujrathi shared what quite essentially veered into the ‘how dare you’ discipline on returning to India instead of attending a tournament in I actually landed in Baku.
“I landed in Baku and I found out that our head of government His Excellency etc wanted to wish the Indian team for their performance. So naturally when I got that information I was glad and on the desire to come over and join the celebration. It is surprising that he has done so in such a short time It took time for us,” Gujrathi posted in X.
Replacing Gujrathi competing at the team’s bronze medal-winning event last year will be held from 25-30 September.
“I reached out to Sarkhan Gashimov (the organizer) and he was sympathetic towards my feelings. Thank him a lot! I need to send my best wishes to Aravind as he plays against the elite players. Such an important event,” Gujji Rati wrote.
