Lucknow: State Secretary communist party of india (consumer price index) Atul Kumar Anjaan (70) passed away at a private hospital on Friday after a long illness.
He died of multiple organ failure caused by terminal cancer. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
Anjaan began his political career in 1977 as president of the National Union of University Students and became the longest-serving president of the Lucknow University Students’ Union (LUSU) from 1978 to 1985.
He played a key role during the 1973 police-PAC rebellion and worked farmer and students. During his political career, he spent four years and nine months in prison. Due to his ability in leading the student movement, he became the President of AISF at the Ludhiana conference in 1979 and served till 1985.
He joined the Communist Party of India in the late 1960s and remained with the party until the end of his life. He was elected as a member of the Party’s National Committee in 1989, as a member of the National Executive Committee in 1992, and as Secretary of the National Secretariat in 1995, a position he held until the end of his life.
In 1997, he became the All India Lok Sabha General Secretary at the Thrissur National Conference and was elected again in 2001, 2006, 2010 and 2016.
He ran against Ghossi for LS elections in 1998 and 2014 but failed.Senior leaders including Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI General Secretary D Raja expressed condolences on Anjaan’s death die.

All India Lok Sabha general secretary Vijoo Krishnan praised Anjaan’s role as a member of the Swaminathan Committee.
