MS Dhoni, a legendary wicketkeeper-batsman and former India captain stressed the point that captains gain respect by the way they “talk and walk” in losing moments.
The 42-year-old Dhoni is one of the most successful cricket captains of all time and also the first to win all ICC white-ball trophies: ICC T20 World Cup (2007), ICC Cricket World Cup (2011) and ICC Champions Trophy (2013).
Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles as well as two Champions League T20 (CLT20) titles.
“During ups and downs you lead by example, because when you’re doing good, it’s very easy to say this is what we do but when you go through tough times, that’s actually the time you need to walk that talk – if at all those moments happen and still are like previously then even if it will be your real-time for respect,” MS Dhoni said in a video posted by Dubai Eye 103.8 YouTube channel.
In this season, Dhoni had scored 161 runs in 11 innings out of his total of 14 matches played with strike rate standing at 220.54 records per average of 53.67.
“The most important thing is that you get respected by those whom you lead. You can’t ask or force someone to respect you but you need to earn it from them. I might have a position in the institution which should be respected. But I as an individual sitting on that chair need to earn that respect. I can’t say please respect me because I am sitting on this chair,” he continued.
CSK lost any hopes of making it into playoffs last Saturday after their defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Indian Premier League match. In course of this game, Dhoni batted for about four overs thereby scoring 25 runs at a strike rate of 192.31.
After the heartbreaking loss for CSK, everyone’s eyes and cameras were on Dhoni waiting for him to open up about what he was going to do next. Nevertheless, the experienced wicketkeeper remained tightlipped leaving his fans in suspense over what he would do next.
Having each won five IPL titles, Dhoni and former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma have records for the most successful captains in IPL history.
Dhoni passed on the captaincy baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad prior to start of IPL 2024 season.
