Virender Sehwag, one of the best batsmen that India has ever produced, doesn’t need to be introduced; nevertheless, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan may have been sarcastic about a recent criticism by the latter in which he failed to specify who the journalist referred to in his query.
Bangladesh virtually assured themselves a place in the Super 8 stage when they beat two out of three teams in Group D including a victory over former champions Sri Lanka.
On Thursday, Bengal Tigers won against Netherlands and after this there was a video of Shakib at the post-match press conference which went viral.
The journalists are asking him if he is aware that Virender Sehwag mentions his batting*, but just as soon as he could open his mouth for a response, the Bangladesh captain interrupted with “who?”, and it ends there (the video clip).
Journalist: “There has been a lot of discussion about your performance, especially a comment by Virender Sehwag that has received much attention…”
Shakib: “Who?”
But more importantly, this seasoned all-rounder underwent an innings change during Bangladesh’s 25-run win versus Netherlands wherein he scored 64 not out off 46 balls.
“What do you mean?”A player does not bat for answering. His job is just to help his team. If he cannot do that then people will talk. I think it’s not such a bad thing,” said Shakib.
In fact, Sehwag actually singled out Shakib on Cricbuzz for having poor run rates during the first two games against Sri Lanka and South Africa respectively.
“If they included him for experience then we didn’t get to see any bit of it. At least stay here some time! It’s not like you’re Hayden or Gilchrist capable of playing pull shots when facing short deliveries; you’re just a Bangladesh player. Play according to your level; you can’t play hook or pull shots, so play the shots that you know,” it read on Cricbuzz by Sehwag.
