Tirupati: Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka police have successfully resolved a dispute between Bommanahal and Medehal villages on the border between the two countries over the ownership of a five-year-old buffalo without the need for a DNA test, the two village groups said. All require DNA testing. Tensions that had arisen over the issue in the two border villages over the past few days were successfully defused on Thursday.
The buffalo was to be sacrificed in a village ritual later this month. The people of Bomanahar and Medhar claim that the animal belongs to them.
Word of the fight reached the police and villagers demanded DNA tests to clarify the claim. They wanted to compare the buffalo’s DNA sample with that of its mother, a farmer in a village in Karnataka, to determine the cow’s ownership.
As tensions escalated, police on both sides of the border held meetings with people from both villages and resolved the issue by handing over the buffaloes to villagers on the Karnataka side of the border. Villagers on the Andhra side agreed with the police decision.
It may be recalled that the Morka police in Karnataka found themselves in an unusual situation when villagers from Boumanahar in Bellary district and medhal village They were approached by an official from Halaharvi mandal in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh to resolve the dispute over the ownership of the buffalo, which was in the custody of the Medehal villagers.
The Bommanahal villagers told the police that the buffalo belonged to them and they planned to sacrifice it at the Sakkama Devi fair to be held later in January.
They also told police that the buffalo’s mother was in Bommanahal and they could conduct a DNA test to confirm ownership. They claimed that the animal disappeared while grazing and was later found in Medhal village.
Meanwhile, AP Halahawi police and Moka police summoned the groups. “We have also warned the people of both villages to put an end to this issue immediately and not to resort to any violence in the future,” he said.
