Shailaja Paik’s journey
Delving deeper in to the unspoken realities of Dalits, especially women ॳ Shailaja Paik cartography of the academia evokes willingness for such devotion. Ordinarily, Dalits are known as ‘low caste’ or ‘untouchables’ in the Hindu hierarchy of castes and also have endured socio-economic difficulties too. Shailaja Paik’s debut novel: ‘Dalit Women’s Education in Modern India: Double Discrimination faces the discrimination and oppression much more faced by Dalit women based on their gender, caste and even the age at which they decide to educate themselves.’ (2014) brings forward the issues that Dalit women in particular face not only in terms of caste but also gender or even the decision of undertaking specific education. This is followed by another book of Shailaja Paik ‘The Vulgarity of Caste: Dalits, Sexuality, and Humanity in Modern India’ (2022), which helps to form the no less effective focus for the comprehension of the dalit women and their lives.
By looking at Dalit women, Shailaja Paik goes beyond the boundaries and levels of oppression and reveals the complexity of their constitution as well as the architectures of caste and gender relations and how they are interrelated to women in particular.
