Joe Biden, president of America. The white house and campaign staff were shocked by the decision to step down. They were caught off guard. For much of the campaign, however, the president has been defiant, even as his own party colleagues have been putting pressure on him to resign so that a candidate could be found who would give Democrats a fighting chance against Republican Donald Trump. According to The New York Post, one staffer commented: “We all found out through tweets, and no one understood what was going on.”
It has been widely reported that President Biden is still in the race as at Saturday night. For this reason alone, about 8 minutes after announcing his withdrawal from the race, the campaign sent a mass email asking for donations for ‘Joe and Kamala’. However, he reportedly told his aides at 1:45 am before releasing it publicly. “He told senior team first. The source said that they probably did not want it leaking.” One source confided
Despite having been diagnosed with Covid-19 since Wednesday, campaign workers in Delaware continued calling delegates for next month’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“No one knows in Delaware,” said a Biden state official.
A close White House source suggested that young aides working under Biden were not necessarily distressed by belated notice regardless of growing demands by Democrats that he resign due to fears regarding mental competence. On one hand there is relief that things are over but there is also regret within Biden’s topmost advisors that they didn’t tell him not to run this year.
In addition, one report quoted another source as saying: “The senior staff who put him in this situation nine months ago (and) prevented him from exiting (the campaign) with dignity are extremely frustrated.”
