On the fateful Tuesday, the rescue team worked tirelessly to save people trapped at Mudakai town after a Wayanad landslide occurred.
Kochi: Devastating damage was caused by heavy rains and landslides that happened in Waynad area of north-eastern Kerala early on Tuesday. Mundakkai experienced landslides following 200 mm rainfall from Monday and 372 mm until Tuesday morning. Choir, roads were flooded and villagers were entrapped. Search teams are still searching for possible survivors. Below is the incident as it unfolded in Wayanad earlier on Tuesday.
2 a.m., 30th July: First mudslide at Mundakkai town
4:10am: Another slide occurred at Choralmala. Puthumala is just two kilometers away where seventeen people died in a major slide last year
According to the Chief Minister, based on the weather forecast there should have between 64-204mm of rainfall in one day on Monday but within first 24 hours there was already 200 mm of rainfall then followed by another 372 mm within next twenty-four hours period.
In the adjacent Malappuram district above several floating bodies found can be seen as they floated along chaliyar river
The Army, Navy, Air Force, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), Police and Fire Brigade are all out in search of any survivors during this severe weather condition
LSGD’s Principal Director V Sambasiva Rao was made Special Officer for Rescue Operations
The state government has declared two days of national mourning.
While Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad have been put under yellow alerts for Wednesday; Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad Kannur and Kasaragod have been put under orange alert by IMD
