Hilly parts of Wayanad district, kerala were heavily flooded with water causing a large landslide on Tuesday morning.
The most affected villages were Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala and Noolpuzha. As a result of the landslides, access to these places has been cut off.
At least 63 people have died in Kerala’s hillside while another 116 may be trapped under mud or debris.
This accident happened when the victims were in deep sleep so that they could not sense it. They are now desperately calling for help as rescuers race against time to save people who are still alive.
Search and rescue operations are going on in full swing, where rescue teams work unstoppably to evacuate those who have been trapped. The Indian Army is assisting through its Joint operations Centre with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Three camps will be established at Wayanad for helping the affected population. According to the Revenue Minister’s Office Kerala State, twelve individuals are being treated at Kalpetta Government Hospital and seventy-seven at WIMS Wayanad. At WIMS eight deaths’ and at Meppadi Community Health Center and Vythiri Taluk Hospital one each. On top of this there are 27 injured being treated in Meppadi CHC with an overall number of fatalities reported at Bathery Taluk hospital being 35 and the rest 27 still receive treatment
A team from Ezhimala Naval Base Kannur is being sent to Choralmala area for helping in evacuation assistance along with other navy personnel from here said the Southern Command spokesperson. The chief minister’s office said Pinarayi Vijayan sought help from naval divers after a major bridge was washed away in Chooralmala thereby hampering the ongoing rescue work. Apart from that, Army and Air Force have also deployed their men to extend support during rescue operations currently underway.
Prior to this meeting with Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) senior officials, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reviewed situation in Wayanad district, which was hit by landslides. Around 200 personnel from Indian Army DSC Center at Kannur and the 122nd TA Battalion from Kozhikode have been rushed to the spot. The Indian Defense Ministry also confirmed that a team of 30 navy divers will be dispatched from Surur Air Force Station along with two helicopters.
