Over the last ten years, Virat Kohli has not only influenced other sports like no other cricketer but also helped cricket to be included in the Olympic programme of Los Angeles 2028. Given that this Indian batting legend still wants more runs and he never gets tired of it is quite normal for fans and experts to wonder what his motivation is.
The same question was fired at the former India captain during RCB’s Royal Gala Dinner ahead of their must-win IPL match against Chennai Super Kings in Bengaluru on May 18.
Kohli responded when he was on stage with Faf du Plessis who was then at the helm of RCB and asked about what kept him hungry and going.
“It’s actually very simple,” said a 35-year-old Kohli. “I think as a sportsman, we do have an end-date to our careers. So I am just working backwards. Because I can’t go on forever because there will be some day when I stop playing and don’t want to look back thinking ‘oh, what if I would have done this,’ so it’s just about not leaving any undone business behind and not having any regrets later which obviously I won’t.”
Even as he had announced his retirement from cricket, Virat Kohli suggested that he would need plenty of time off before planning anything else.
“Once I am done, I will be gone, you won’t see me for a while (smiles). And that is why till now while I play, I want to give absolutely everything that I have, that is the only thing keeping me alive,” he mentioned.
Currently,Virat kohli leads the table for highest run getters in ongoing IPL 2024. He has made 661 runs so far in 13 innings at a strike rate of 155.16 with an average of 66.10. He has scored five fifties and one hundred.

On May 22, RCB will take on CSK who are ranked third (14 points in 13 matches) while the Kohli led outfit is placed fifth (12 points in 13 matches) on the IPL points table and must beat the side who have won it all five times by a big margin to remain not only in contention for playoffs but also go past its net run rate which stands at +0.387 compared to CSK’s +0.528.
