In the Paris Olympics, Cuban Wrestlers Yosnelis Guzmán Lopez will take Indian Vinesh Fugatposition in women’s team 50kg freestyle final. Yesterday she made Olympic history by being the first ever Indian woman wrestler to make it to the finals of the category only for her to be disqualified during Wednesday morning’s weigh-in for being over weight.
Phogat was going to face Team USA Sarah Ann Hildebrandt For gold medal.
This is according to a statement issued by the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee which said that Fugate was disqualified because: “Vineesh failed the weigh-in on the following day. According to Article 11 of International Wrestling Rules, Vinesh failed must be replaced by defeated wrestler on semifinals. In this case Yosnelis Guzman Lopez (CUB) will compete with finalists winner.
The fact that Fugate was disqualified after a hundred grams forced her out of contention for a medal. The IOA has expressed its regrets and called for privacy regarding Fugate, who is participating in his third Olympics:
Indian Wrestling Team stated that “It is unfortunate that our Indian delegation publicized the news about disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from women’s 50kg group… She did not manage to meet required weight limit this morning despite all great efforts by whole team”.
After weighing in at polyclinic in Olympic Village due to severe dehydration Fugate had to go there for treatment. Later this morning, India coach confirmed what happened on why she was disqualified: “She weighed 100 grams more than she should have.” This is against rules so she got disqualified.”
According to international wrestling rules, any wrestler who exceeds the weight limit during weigh-in will be placed at position last in final rankings thus aborting their prospects of competing.
