In association with a school foundation in sector 26, Chandigarh, Indian national theatre organized the ‘Varsha Ritu Sangeet Sandya’ program to mark monsoon season.
Today we also remember Navjeevan Khosla, founder of Sangam Theatre on his birth day. It is Avinash Kumara starting off as a Hindustani classical vocalist singing the Megh, an ancient raga associated with the monsoons. He chose traditional piece from Jhaptaal cycle called “Garaje Ghataa Ghan Kaare Kaare”. The bandish that he sang in this Raga shows the Kirana style of vistaar. “Malhaar Ang reflects vilambit production. He performed a Thar composition for teenagers named “Ghan ghanan Ghanan Ghan Ghor”. His last two songs were Raga Desh (another monsoon Sangeet raga).
Vidushi’s presentation was followed by Mita Pandita who is one of India’s leading and popular Hindustani classical singers.
The first one was his ‘Rag Surdasi Malhar’ and ‘Garjat Aaye Re Badarwa’. Then came her performances of “Badrwa Barsan Ko aaye” and “Bundniya barsay Gayan Ko” before performing Tarana for Ek Taal in ati drutlay. She went on with another melodious number for Teentaal in Raag Gaud Malhaar’s ‘Sanyain Maura Re’, which was then succeeded by Jhuk Aaye Badariya Sawan Ki that kept people spell bound. Her recital ended with kajri.
The artist was supported by Tarun Joshi on organ and Nawaz Pandit Ram Kumar Mishra on tabla. Those who like music can come free of charge. It was finally won by Ustat Bal from DPS School.
