According to a PTI report, the Federal Public Service Commission (UPSC) is planning to deploy advanced facial recognition and artificial intelligence (AI)-based CCTV surveillance systems to enhance Exam security and prevent misconduct. It will involve two key technologies: Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication, face recognition and QR code scanning for e-admit tickets; AI-driven live video during the exam monitor.
UPSC’s new strategy through technology
The commission conducts 14 major examinations including the prestigious Civil Services Examination, which is conducted in about 80 examination centres throughout India for ensuring fair conduct.The tender document of June 3, 2024 by the commission states that : “UPSC attaches great importance to the conduct of examinations in a free, fair and impartial manner.”
According to PTI, UPSC proactively uses digital tools for biometric verification of candidates’ data, activity monitoring during examinations and prevention of cheating/fraud/impersonation. An AI-enabled CCTV setup will watch over the exam venue so as not to have any blindspots while generating suspiciousness or system errors alerts.
Just-in-Time System For CBI probes Enhancing Exam Security
The committee insisted on its promptness that requires strict attendance management with proactive alarms against unauthorised movements or disturbances during exams. The technical tender deadline is July 7 , while bid opening at this time is scheduled for 1:30 pm on that day.
CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in exams like UGC-NET – NEET-UG conducted by national testing agency assumes special significance and highlights further urgency in maintaining examination administration safety.
As indicated in this tender notice UPSC is seeking bids for two key technology solutions:
Scanning e admit ticket electronically using fingerprints and faces: The system will identify candidates using Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication (or digital fingerprint capture without Aadhaar) as well as facial recognition. Furthermore, the QR code of the e-Admit card will be scanned for confirmation.
AI-based real-time CCTV surveillance: Artificial intelligence will monitor exam venues. This AI will detect any suspicious activity and generate alerts such as;
- Unauthorized movement at entrances/exits during exams.
- Poor furniture arrangement in classroom.
- Non-functional/tampered with CCTV cameras.
- Classroom activities outside exam time.
- Inactivity of invigilators beyond the set time limit
The artificial intelligence platform is intended to raise red flags about incidents that may indicate cheating, unfair tactics or absence of an invigilator, according to the tender document.
