The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday denounced Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) for promoting criminality and showing no sympathy towards victims of heinous crimes in Uttar Pradesh.
This statement from the BJP was in response to allegations involving members of their party in two separate incidents: attempted rape cases in Kannauj and Ayodhya.
During a press conference, BJP Spokesperson and MP Sudhanshu Trivedi criticized the Samajwadi Party’s handling of the incident, specifically mentioning the alleged rape case of a minor in Ayodhya. The case of Mohid Khan, Socialist Party leader. Trivedi termed it as an insensitive reaction by the party with political instincts rather than empathy with victims of crime.
“In Kannauj, another Samajwadi Party leader has been accused of trying to rape a minor girl,” Trivedi said. “It’s not just about committing a crime but also about how insensitive this party is when faced with such an allegation.”
Trivedi recalled former Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s controversial remark that “boys will be boys and they make mistakes”, referring to a past case in which two rape victims were charged in the North Bang committed suicide due to lack of justice.
“Like ‘UP ke do ladke’ (Two boys from UP) – Rahul Gandhi from Congress and Akhilesh Yadav from SP,” Trivedi noted “as these two boys grew up stronger; so did criminals gain courage. Rather than looking at religion-based judgments on crime and criminals; they should only be referred to as criminals.”
Furthermore, the BJP representative also accused a female Samajwadi Party leader of making insensitive comments about the Kannauj incident and questioning why the 15-year-old victim went out at night to find work. “This speaks volumes on what Samajwadi party is; a hideout for criminals,” Trivedi added.
Congress was also criticized by Trivedi who found it difficult to understand why its leaders have kept silent on these events. “Where is Priyanka Gandhi when she claims to be a woman’s defender with her slogan ‘I am a girl, I can fight’? Why do they change their tone from Ayodhya To Kannauj To Kolkata?” he queried. “It appears that they only love criminals, terrorists, corrupt people, riotists and rapists.”
The BJP’s assault of opposition parties also had an extensive component which involved condemnation of Congress party and its Indian Union allies as “criminals cover-up.” Trivedi highlighted the importance of having sensitive and honest talks about such issues, urging all political outfits to put justice above politics.
