They were arrested near Gorakhpur railway station on Friday night. The police recovered 44 mobile phones worth Rs 10 lakh from their possession. As many as four cases have been registered against Manoj, while Karan has two cases against him. The minor’s criminal history is under investigation.
Gorakhpur GRP SP Sandeep Kumar Meena, who is in charge of the investigation, said leader Manoj revealed that he paid two gang members a monthly salary of Rs 15,000 each, as well as free food and accommodation allowance for travel.
“Those who complete small goals will be included in the gang”
The gang specializes in stealing people’s mobile phones in busy markets and railway stations. The stolen phones were handed over to a cartel, which shipped them across the border to Bangladesh and Nepal, further limiting the likelihood that the stolen phones could be tracked and the gang caught,” Meena said.
He added that police worked for a week before tracking the gang’s movements based on footage collected from more than 200 CCTV cameras and eventually nabbing them. The GRP recovered 44 Android phones, a gun and a knife worth Rs 10 lakh during the arrest.
Explaining the workings of the gang, Meena said first, the gang leader Manoj looks for young people who need money and have some education in his village of Sahebganj. These members used to be well-dressed and fluent in Hindi, so they would not arouse suspicion while traveling by train or bus.
“They use these weapons to intimidate anyone who resists during theft. In some cases, these weapons are used to threaten victims,” the officer said. “They also receive separate weapons training for this purpose.”
Another officer said Manoj will train them for three months and set small goals for them. Those who can complete these small goals are included in the gang and receive a fixed salary. They conducted surveys of Gorakhpur and nearby areas, including Sant Kabir Nagar, Maharajganj and Kushinagar, and targeted markets and railway stations.
Sources said the gang booked train tickets to avoid suspicion and often changed bogies during travel. “They researched mobile phone models online, determined their market value, and then sold them at 30-40% of the original price,” police said.
The gang rented a room in Durgabari, Gorakhpur, but it was not verified. “They work together, and the leader often waits near car stalls, collects stolen items and escapes. The stolen mobile phones are smuggled to Bangladesh through West Bengal, and then smuggled to Nepal through local traffickers, earning high profits.
Police said Manoj would be questioned more about the group and its members.
