Sohum Shah’s much awaited film, Tumbbad, was given a fresh theatrical release on Friday, September 13. The film did better than the original first day business, netting around Rs 1.50 crore nett at the opening in India, according to trade website sacnilk. This collection is more than what The Buckingham Murders, Kareena Kapoor Khans’s last offer made, on its first day in India. Hansal Mehta’s direction opened to collections of Rs 1.25 crores nett on Friday.
Tumbbad is expected to grow towards the weekend considering all the buzz around its re-release and considering the kind of visual experience it will provide to the audience in the theatres over the weekend. Produced by Sohum Shah and Aanand L Rai, the film is predicted to do business of more than Rs 10 crores nett within the lifetime collection at the domestic box office.
Tumbbad, having no new Hindi competition, is expected to easily achieve the Rs 10 crore nett target in the first week itself. Being a crime thriller, The Buckingham Murders is likely to appeal to a certain demographic and thus the chances of the film being able to be pitched with Tumbbad are slim.
In the meantime, Sohum announced Tumbbad 2 on Saturday, September 14. Although he did not provide any detailed information, he revealed a teaser of the film which suggested that the sequel will be more intriguing than the first installment of the film.
The revenue generated by the re-release of Tumbbad was indeed expected. The film was well-received by critics and even had a second life on OTT.
