Madurai: Margaji Ashtami Chariot Festival exist Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple Monday attracted thousands of worshipers. Celebrate during Tamil month of MargajiKnown as Margashirsha in Sanskrit, the festival embodies spiritual devotion and devotion and attracts admirers from across the state and beyond.
Margazhi is considered an auspicious month dedicated to the worship of gods like Shiva, Shakti and Vishnu, and this festival embodies this spirit with solemnity and reverence.
The chariot procession begins at dawn with the deities Meenakshi and Sundareswarar riding in elaborately decorated chapparam (chariot) through the four main streets surrounding the temple. The streets were filled with the sounds of traditional music and the fervent chants of devotees. The highlight of the event is the female devotees pulling the chariot of Goddess Meenakshi, symbolizing devotion and empowerment. The festival’s unique traditions attract widespread participation and admiration, reflecting the inclusivity of the celebration.
As the chariot moves gracefully through the city, thousands of devotees line the streets, offering prayers and capturing the sacred sight. Many people also take part in the tradition of collecting rice scattered along the parade route, a practice said to symbolize prosperity and the elimination of hunger.
