Once the United States had won the T20 World Cup match against Pakistan, Monank Patel, their captain who has become also vice-captain, termed it as an opportunity that will open various doors for his side. However, he urges his players to remain focused and control their feelings as they prepare to face India in the next match.
On Thursday, the co-hosts USA beat former champions Pakistan in a Super Over but now have another formidable opponent in India on June 12th.
“I am pleased with the win. It was a terrific performance against Pakistan at our first ever World Cup. We are just focusing on playing against India,” said Patel during the press conference after the match.
“But we are not going to be too emotional about it. We’ll take time to enjoy this (victory), and then make sure we come back fresh next day,” emphasized Monank.
Patel played a crucial innings of fifty runs and explained that this victory over Asian giants is significant milestone for cricket in America.
“We have opened so many doors by winning against Pakistan in this tournament. To be able to host this World Cup itself is an achievement; then performing like a team here helps us grow cricket in USA. I think today is one big day for Team USA and I would say not just for USA even whole USA community,” he said.
Even so, having won against Canada and Pakistan teams that belong to Group A with four points each currently topping these groups, they do not think of getting into ‘Super 8’ stage yet.
“What people are thinking is about our fluke wins does not trouble us at all. We know what we worked for and what we can do. Ireland doesn’t even cross our minds right now either. So Super 8 is way ahead; we concentrate on specific games,” he stated.
As of now, according to Patel, his teammates are celebrating an unexpected triumph.
“Obviously everyone is happy. They are celebrating with their teammates and their families and friends,” he said.
