Image for representation purposes only. Four Indian medical students drowned in a river near St Petersburg in Russia.
The bodies of the four students were to be sent to India as soon as possible with help from the Indians missions in Russia working together with the Russian authorities.
Nearby, at Veliky Novgorod city, four students including two boys and two girls aged 18-20 years were studying at Novgorod State University.
According to local media reports, a female Indian student who went out into the Volkhov River from the beach began drowning and her colleagues attempted to rescue her leading to their death.
In their attempt to save her, three others also drowned in the river.
A third boy was pulled to safety by local people.

These students were studying medicine at Veliky Novgorod State University, according to The Consulate General of India in St Petersburg
“Sincere condolences to the bereaved families,” it posted on X.
The Consulate General was also working closely with local authorities from Veliky Novgorod town towards ensuring that mortal remains have reached home without delay.
“It has been contacted by them and they assured all possible support.” It added.
