The Supreme Court has asked the Delhi government to call a meeting to discuss measures on improving urban green coverage in private institutions. This directive comes as concerns rise over reduction in tree cover and its effect on residents who suffer from heat. The vacation judges of this court, Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan, noted that people should keep their eyes open always. “We have made our submissions before the Delhi Government, Ministry of Forests and Environment, Tree Authority, MCD and direct data analysis in respect of such illegal and high-end practice of felling trees”, said the bench.
“the minister for forests will summons a meeting with the attendance of all officials; therefore, it has been constituted committee experts for discussing comprehensive measures towards greening national capital New Delhi.” added the bench.
Rampant tree felling is a serious problem that cannot be sidelined by anyone including Supreme Court as stated by it. A court on Monday asked a clear statement from DDA deputy chairman over allegations of trees being fell in ridge area which was allegedly done under LG orders without proper permission.
Previously, Supreme Court had issued criminal contempt notice against Subhasish Panda who is DDA vice-chairman. This happened following indiscriminate cutting down of trees along Sabari stretch southern ridge so as to establish road that connects Chhatarpur to South Asian University.
Court also expressed its displeasure at “misleading” affidavit filed by Vice Chairman DDA stating wrong facts in court due to which DDA should plant 100 times more number of trees than those chopped.
Various officials and expert committees would attend the forest department organized meeting towards ensuring a comprehensive approach that will lead increased green cover within New Delhi.
