NEW DELHI: Due to rain, the IPL match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans was abandoned with no balls bowled.
SRH has therefore become the third team to qualify after Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals which are still leading the table.
However even in a washout Sunrisers obtained a point that took their total points to 15 with one more league match remaining. They will play Punjab Kings who already have been knocked out of the race in their last league game on May 19.
GT, who were runners-up last year and champions in 2022, saw their hopes dashed due to another washed out game last time around. Thus they finish the season with 12 points from 14 matches.
toss was delayed until 7 pm because of rain and wet outfield. The drizzle turned into a steady shower as covers remained locked over pitch as well as outfield.
Accordingly, the cut-off time for a five-over game was set at 10:56 PM which means that by around 10:15pm there should be no drizzle for mop up but since it continued raining cats and dogs, it forced officials to abandon this match.
This is only the second IPL game called off till now due to rain and wet outfield.
Four teams — Chennai Super Kings (14), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (12), Delhi Capitals (14) and Lucknow Super Giants (12) — are still in fray for the battle for the last spot.
If LSG win against Mumbai Indians on Friday, they will move to 14 points to stay mathematically alive but CSK will seal the spot if they beat RCB or the game is washed out on Saturday.
If RCB beat CSK by at least 18 runs or 11 balls to spare then they will grab fourth place available based on net run rate as they would be on same number of points i.e.: with DC, CSK and LSG (if they win).
