Patna: Four policemen, including a sub-inspector, were injured in a stone-pelting incident as local residents protested against police in Triveniganj in Supaul district on Thursday.
A mob gathered at the police station in the morning accusing Triveniganj police station house officer (SHO) Ramsevak Rawat and his team of taking bribes and abusing people who came to report crimes. Demand action against them.
They also threw stones and bricks at the police station, forcing security personnel to retaliate and use wire charges to disperse them. A video of the clash also went viral on social media, in which police allegedly wielded bricks to disperse the crowd and even raised military-style weapons. Five people, including two women, have been detained in connection with the incident, police said.
Supaul police chief Shaishav Yadav said that around 10.40 am, hundreds of local people, including men and women, came to the gate of Triveniganj police station and started protesting against the security personnel. “The SHO and the Triveniganj police inspector persuaded the crowd to disperse. But people led by Bijendra Yadav, the husband of the Triveniganj chief councillor, blocked the market in the town. Meanwhile, a police vehicle coming from Jadiya station was intercepted and the crowd started throwing bricks and stones at the policemen, injuring some of them and clearing the roadblock.
The mob, angry at the police action, subsequently blocked State Highway 327 E.
Triveniganj divisional police officer Bipin Kumar said efforts were on to identify the culprits and book them. The situation is currently under control and is being closely monitored,” he said.
Meanwhile, Triveniganj SHO Rawat refuted the allegations and said that brokers were not allowed to enter the police station and hence the police station was considered part of the conspiracy.
