film and television actress Ssujata Mehta shares how she prepared for her role. She says, “My process starts with understanding the script, the story and how my character relates to others. I get to know the character’s past, present and future in depth. Earlier, we didn’t get the script in advance; everything was spontaneous , including dialogues and scenes. Today, there is more structure, including workshops and rehearsals. I highlight my dialogues, mark key points, and discuss my approach with the director. For example, in “Yatim,” I did a lot of improvisation. In “Rashomon”, I play a gray character, whether it is a drama, TV or movie, I will try my best to understand and try this character.
Ssujata, who has appeared in films such as prati ghatYatim, Gunahon Ka Devta believes in staying grounded, connecting with people, and living a simple life. “I don’t like living in a shell. I often travel in rickshaws or trains, interact with strangers and explore new places,” she said. “Nature helps me stay grounded, like Vipassana meditation. At home, we don’t use the dining room table—we sit on the floor and eat. I also made sure to eat with my staff when I was alone. These practices remind me of my roots and keep me connected to reality.
The actress shared how she loves visiting her hometown. She said, “My hometown is Bhav Nagar and I visit my Kudvi temple every year to perform prayers and havan. I also enjoy talking to people of all ages, from newborns to senior citizens. Their blessings and perspectives on various things enrich my life.
She added: “My family is inextricably linked to Myanmar; my Nanaji started business in Myanmar. Visiting Myanmar to express my gratitude to my Nanaji was a fulfilling experience. Knowing where I come from makes I am down to earth, which makes me clear when I am confused. Learning from my predecessors and respecting tradition are things that I value very much, and I am also grateful to my parents.
