Following their decision to part ways with Ricky Ponting, Delhi Capitals are not looking to consider Sourav Ganguly for the head coach position. According to report, despite being interested in doing so, DC management have reported hesitancy about assigning him joint roles as both the Director of Cricket and head coach.

Instead, Gautam Gambhir is a candidate they are considering because he has been recognized by his best mentoring and coaching skills.

Currently serving as DC’s Director of Cricket, Ganguly was once BCCI president. He has got franchises like ILT20 Dubai capitals and SA T20 Pretoria Capitals which he manages for Delhi Capitals. A source cited in the report mentioned, “Ganguly already has a lot of things on his plate – planning multiple things for the franchise as the Director of Cricket.”

The management feels that such a role will require a very hands-on coach who actively follows the cricket circuit. Such an individual could be someone like Gambhir.

“The team needs a very hands-on coach who follows the circuit very aggressively. Like Gautam Gambhir does. It’s no surprise that he has been so successful as a mentor. He keeps track of players – both international and domestic,” adds another source.

This is why there are deliberations about appointing someone else to take over from Ricky Ponting before the mega auctions come around

“The management doesn’t want a stop-gap arrangement for the head coach position as it’s the season right after the mega auction as the new cycle gets underway,” explains another source close to this matter.

In addition, according to sources familiar with this matter at DC, two former World Cup-winning cricketers have reportedly been approached regarding taking over as head coaches.

Furthermore, structural changes have been made within this team even though it is still one without an IPL title since its establishment among original eight teams of IPL.
