New Delhi: a series gut bacteria A recent study published in the journal Nature Microbiology found that it may contribute to the development of autism in children.
stool sample Therefore, it can help diagnose neurodevelopmental conditions Researchers say one of these individuals will display repetitive behaviors and affect social behavior.
“It usually takes three to four years to diagnose suspected autism, with most children diagnosed by the age of six,” Su Qi, lead author of the study from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, told The Guardian.
“our Microbiome Biomarker Panel It performs well in children under four years old, which may aid in early diagnosis,” Su said.
Over the past decade, research has shown that gut bacteria play an important role in autism in children. According to previous research, children with autism have differences in their gut microbes and show delays in gut microbial diversity.
However, the researchers said these studies focused primarily on the bacteria in the guts of these children.
In this study, the authors studied other microorganisms (fungi and viruses, among others) and their functions in the guts of children diagnosed with autism.
The researchers analyzed stool samples from nearly 1,630 children aged 1 to 13 in China, as well as their diet and medication data. About 900 children have autism.
To conduct the analysis, the team used Metagenome sequencingwhich facilitates the study of genetic material recovered from clinical samples such as feces.
The authors found differences in more than 50 species of bacteria, 7 species of fungi, and 18 species of viruses in the gut microbiomes of children with autism.
In addition, differences were found in 12 metabolic functions among these children.
The researchers also developed a Artificial intelligence based model See if the results – the presence of 31 different deficits or functions – can be used to predict whether a child has autism.
They found that the model showed “higher diagnostic accuracy” than looking at just one type of bacteria, e.g.
“While genetic factors play an important role in autism, the microbiome can act as a contributing factor by regulating immune responses, neurotransmitter production and metabolic pathways,” Su was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
“This doesn’t necessarily imply causation, but it suggests that the microbiome may influence the severity or expression of autism spectrum symptoms,” she said.
