New Delhi: President Drupadi Murmu on Friday claimed that delayed or weak action would encourage unscrupulous people and said prompt legal action against corrupt elements was of utmost importance. Referring to the Central Vigilance Commission’s (CVC) Vigilance Awareness Week campaign here, she said trust is the basis of social life.
“It is a source of unity. Public trust in government work and welfare programs is a source of strength in governance. Corruption is not only an obstacle to economic progress but also reduces trust in society. It adversely affects feelings of camaraderie among people “It also has broad implications for the unity and integrity of the country,” Murmu said.
The President said it was extremely important to take prompt legal action against corrupt individuals.
“Slow or ineffective action encourages unscrupulous people. But it is equally important that every action and every person should not be suspect. We should avoid this situation. Keeping in mind the dignity of the human person, no action should be taken out of Malice.
Citing direct benefit transfer (DBT) and e-tendering, she said the Indian government has taken several measures to curb corruption.
Murmu said properties worth more than $12 billion have been seized under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in the past 10 years.
“I believe the Indian government’sZero tolerance for corruption‘Policies will eliminate corruption at its root causes,’ the president said.
Integrity watchdog CVC holds an annual awareness week. This year, October 28 to November 3 is the “Integrity Culture, National Prosperity” Promotion Week.
In conjunction with the Vigilance Awareness Week, the Commission has also organized a three-month preventive vigilance campaign, which will be conducted by various central government ministries/organizations from August 16 to November 15.
The five focus areas of activities are capacity building, identification and implementation of system improvements, updating of notifications/guidelines/manuals, handling of complaints received before June 30, 2024, and dynamic digital presence.
Central Vigilance Commissioner Praveen Kumar Srivastava and Vigilance Commissioner AS Rajeev were present at the event.
