What crime was Sukhbir Singh Badal accused of?
Former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was declared a “tankhaiya” for the “mistakes” committed by the party. This includes the pardon of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmit Ram Rahim and the 2015 blasphemy case.
They also revoked the title of ‘Fakhr-e-Qaum’ conferred on former Punjab chief minister, late Parkash Singh Badal, and urged party traitors to unite and work for the party.
Sukhbir was appointed acting chairman of SAD in March 2007 and was appointed deputy chief minister by his father in January 2009.
Sukhbir did not specify the mistakes he made in his apology to the government in July. Akar Takht Jasedar responded to the accusations of Akali dissidents. He was evasive while expressing remorse. On July 1, SAD dissidents Bibi Jagir Kaur, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Surjit Singh Rakhra, Prem Singh Chandumajra, Sarwan Singh Phillaur, Sucha Singh Chottepur, Bhai Manjit Singh and others met Akar. Takht Jasedhar admitted in writing that he was involved in religious violations during the SAD rule in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.
They expressed remorse for their actions and sought religious atonement.
In a reply submitted on July 24, Sukhbir apologized for “all that was said against him in the complaint” submitted by the leader of the dissident Syrian Democratic Union (now the Shiromani Akali Dal reform movement), saying that all Mistakes as “chetachet vich hoian inhan saarian bhullan” (all mistakes committed intentionally or unintentionally) while admitting them as a humble Sikh.

However, the five high priests chose to call these “his decisions” and “gunahan” (crimes), and they seemed to blame him for weakening the Akali Dal.
What’s the punishment?

Before announcing religious punishments, Akal Takht Jasedar instructed everyone to hang placards with the inscription Qurbani around their necks, seeking forgiveness and expressing devotion to God.

The then Union Minister Buta Singh was declared a “tankhaiya” for violating Akal Takht directives after Operation Blue Star. He was excommunicated in early 1985 because he failed to appear before Takht.
Surjit Singh Barnala, then Chief Minister of the Akal Dal, defied the Akal Takht edict and resigned as Chairman of the Sudan Democratic Unionist Party and Merged with other factions to achieve Akali unity and was therefore declared a “tankhaiya” and then excommunicated in February 1987. His government was also dismissed in May 1987 and he appeared in Akkal Takht He later appeared in Akkal Takht in December 1988
