this pakistan cricket board (PCB) Chairman, Mohsin Naqvirevealed the resignation of former Test coach Jason Gillespie, highlighting a clear division of responsibilities in team management.
Talking about the matter, Geo.tv quoted Naqvi as saying, “The role of the head coach is to guide the team and the role of the selection committee is to select the players.”
Former Australia fast bowler Gillespie, 49, resigned last week, citing frustration with poor communication and the erosion of his role.
Gillespie, who was appointed on a two-year deal in April, faces looming challenges to his tenure, including a series defeat to Bangladesh and a loss to England in Multan. After these setbacks, PCB made significant changes, including removing Gillespie from the selection panel and removing features like Babar AzamShaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah.
Although Pakistan bounced back and beat England 2-1, Gillespie expressed dissatisfaction with his limited involvement in the team’s decision-making, particularly regarding the sacking of the performance coach Tim Nelson. He said the lack of communication made him question his role in the organization.
The PCB accepted Gillespie’s resignation, the second high-profile coaching exit in recent months after Gary Kirsten resigned as white-ball coach over differences with selectors. With these departures, Pakistan has had seven coaches in different formats in the past three years, raising concerns over the stability of the team management.
Naqvi’s comments signal the PCB’s ongoing efforts to clarify and strengthen the boundaries between coaching and selection responsibilities, but the recent turmoil has highlighted the challenge of maintaining consistency in the national team’s leadership structure.
