Latour first noticed Gil’s potential on the tennis court and was immediately struck by the young man’s talent. My first impression was the same as everyone else’s when I first saw him with the Nets. The immediate thought that comes to mind is “Wow, this kid is so talented.”
Gill, 24, has emerged as a standout player across formats and is especially known for his stellar performances in the 2023 ODIs.
Russell believes captaincy will enhance Gill’s performance as much as it benefits Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
He expressed his belief that leadership responsibilities can bring out the best in Gill: “I feel captaincy brings out the best in Virat and Rohit, and I feel the same is true for Shubman as well. Although He’s not the captain yet, but I’m pretty sure in the leadership team, when you step into that role and lead other people, it gives you that extra responsibility, which is good and I think that’s good for a young guy like that is very good.
Gill recently led India to a 4-1 victory over Zimbabwe in the T20I series, providing him with valuable captaincy experience. His leadership potential was also recognized and he was appointed vice-captain in T20Is and ODIs.
As Shubman Gill continues to develop as a cricketer, Ratul’s confidence in his leadership abilities suggests that Gill could become a key figure in the future of Indian cricket, with the potential to lead the team in all formats of the game.
