Formerly speaker About Birla has been put forward as a candidate by NDA. India elected Kodikunnil Suresh who is Congress’s leader and Lok Sabha’s oldest member.
After almost fifty years, the greatest contest of the Speaker of the House is about to happen. It will be a tough battle since the Bharatiya Janata Party, in power, is facing a strong Indian opposition bloc led by Congress.
It is the third time this post has been contested since independence.
On 26th June, The Speaker of 18th Lok Sabha will be elected.
This would only be the third election for Lok Sabha speakership
The first one was held in 1952 between GV Mavalankar and Shankar Shantaram according to LOK SABHA SECRETARIAT At that time, Mavalankar secured 394 votes while Shantaram had55 votes (LOK SABHA SECRETARIAT).
The second one happened in 1976 between Baliram Bhagat and Jagannath Rao. In this case, Bhagat got 344 votes with Jagannath Rao receiving 58 (LOK SABHA SECRETARIAT).
The recent game is expected to have lower winning probabilities.

In recently concluded Lok Sabha election for 2024; NDA won a total number of293 seats which were more than half so that they could form majority government on their own out of 272 available seats while INDIA bagged234 seats. Whereas Freedom Party or other regional parties won16 seat in total.
Even before his nomination application was submitted for speaker position from congress party, Rahul Gandhi had announced that other than the name proposed by NDA for speakership rahul gandhi said “the person can also take his decision regarding deputy speakership as previous against him”
Rahul Gandhi said thereafter: “Rajnath Singh claimed he would call Malikajun Hag but he has not called him… Prime Minister Modi is requesting the cooperation of opposition parties but we leaders were humiliated. K Suresh, who has been elected eight times as a congressman, filed the paper to become speaker.
Birla was elected unanimously by NDA candidate for the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha.
The move came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed Birla’s name which has since been endorsed by all major opposition parties including Congress, TMC, DMK and BJD. Also, YSRCP and TDP backed Birla’s nomination.
