The EC has issued a notice against this former judge seeking clarification over derogatory remarks made by him regarding Banerjee. He responded to the European Commission’s notification on Monday.
While going through this response, the EC said in its order that it had been “ satisfied that Gangopadhyay committed a low-level attack and thereby violated provisions of Model Code of Conduct”.
The pollster observed “worse abuses” committed by BJP leaders and said women enjoyed utmost respect in Indian society. The statement said that behind these ideas are expressed through Constitution and all institutions continuously pursue these ideal values- ensuring rights and dignity for women at all levels further empowering them.
In its four-page order, the poll panel said Gangopadhyay’s statement “is completely condemnable when used against any woman, let alone the senior political leaders and constitutional office holders he targeted” . It added that the BJP leader had “brought damage and disrepute to West Bengal, which has a distinguished tradition of respect for women”.
