The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) applied for an arrest warrant for Myanmar military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing on Wednesday.
He said there were reasonable grounds to believe junta leaders were involved in crimes against the Rohingya Muslim minority.
A panel of three judges will now decide whether to issue an arrest warrant.
More than 730,000 Rohingya have fled from Rakhine State in northwestern Myanmar to neighboring Bangladesh.
Myanmar is not a signatory to the Rome Statute that established the ICC, but rulings in 2018 and 2019 found that the court had jurisdiction over some alleged crimes that occurred in ICC member Bangladesh.
A few days ago, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yove Galante and Hamas leader Mohammed Dave.
