Gambhir is the new coach who defined Rohit and Kohli There’s still much cricket left in there.
Since the pre-opener was announced, the rumor industry has been working overtime. The person who will head India’s cricket team as a coach is Gautam Gambhir. Inside IPL, he had an intense argument with batting talisman Virat Kohli (2013 KKR and RCB) and 2023 (LSG vs RCB) may be behind it.
There is more history. Gambhir missed out on playing in England’s Rajkot Test match of 2016 because he was ill but returned to bat for opener at Kuala Lumpur Rahul In fact, he has a captain then called Kohli.
On a rainy Monday in Mumbai however, it seemed like there was plenty of water under the bridge. The gritty ex-southpaw opener floated some theories ahead of his side’s visit to Sri Lanka for a six-match white-ball series (three T20Is and three ODIs), suggesting that this would be a tough one both for him and Virat in the dressing room.
“The relationship between me and Virat Kohli, I think is between two mature people. It might be good for TRP but it’s not public,” Gambhir said further adding “Everyone has got right to fight on field for their team, their jersey, and hopefully come back into a winning dressing room.”
Moreover, Gambhir put on his India hat saying “But you now represent India and 1.4 billion Indians so we should be on same page trying to make our country proud.”
They have never been cold about each other which was evident during IPL 2024 when they cordially met each other again where Kohli targeting headlines famously replied “logon ka masala khatam” at an event.
When asked whether he had talked to Kohli after being appointed coach, Gambhir said, “How many times have I spoken to him after I announced the appointment or before I announced it, during the game, after the game… Yes Sometimes it’s just because we want to be in the headlines… it doesn’t matter.
However, he reaffirmed his respect for Kohli by giving him the Man of the Match award after Kohli scored his maiden international century at Kolkata in 2009.
“He’s a complete pro; he is a world class athlete and world class player. As a player I hold him in very high regard that will continue. Hopefully we can work well together.”
Another person closely associated with Gambhir was Rohit SharmaLike Virat, he has retired from T20Is but will continue leading India in Tests and ODIs. He prays that Rohit and Kohli still have huge reservoirs of cricketing wisdom within them.
“They’ve both shown that they can perform well on big stage whether it’s T20 World Cup or 50-over World Cup whereas One thing I can tell you straight away is they both have more cricket left. More so with titles Trophies coming alongwith an Australian tour and as long as they are fit so will be 2027 ODI World Cup.
According to records, by 2027 Kohli will turn 39 while Rohit will turn 40.
