After a week-long search, 4-year-old German Shepherd-Husky mix Athena returns to green bay hot springsFlorida, just in time Christmas Eveand even rang the doorbell to announce her return.
Athena fled her home on December 15, leaving her owner, Brooke Comer, and her family searching for her. When they returned from church that day, a neighbor sent a photo of Athena outside their house. Upon returning home, they found Athena’s collar in her crate, but there was no obvious sign of how she escaped.
The following week, Cuomo launched a wide-ranging search, releasing missing dog Advertisements that prompt neighbors and residents of nearby towns to offer assistance. Reports of sightings of Athena poured in, suggesting that she had roamed nearly 20 miles during her adventures.
Despite receiving frequent updates on her dog’s location, Comer’s attempts to find Athena were never successful.
“She is the all-time champion of hide and seek. Every time I see it, my heart skips a beat. Excitement is followed by heartbreak because we are always one step behind,” Comer said.
Christmas Eve Miracle
The search ended in the early hours of Christmas Eve, and it was heart-pounding. At 2.30am local time, Comer received a doorbell notification, accompanied by the barking of her other dog.
“I was kind of at a loss,” Comer recalled. “When I checked my phone, there she was, Athena, jumping to the door and ringing the doorbell,” Comer added.
Comer immediately opened the door and Athena rushed in, heading straight to her son who was half asleep on the sofa. After licking him, Athena grabbed her balls and prepared to start the game before returning to the cage for some rest.
Comer thanked neighbors and the greater community for their support in helping her family stay hopeful throughout the ordeal. Athena’s next steps include a thorough veterinary exam, flea and tick treatment, and a microchip implant to ensure she always finds her way home.
“She’s back where she belongs, and this experience reminds us of the kindness of our community,” Comer said.
