Supreme Court ends contempt proceedings against Swamy Ramdev, Acharya Balakrishna and Patanjali Ayurveda Ltd. case of deceptive advertising.
The Supreme Court had criticized Ramdev and Acharya for their misleading advertisements that did not conform to the principles of evidence-based medicine. The company admitted it was in breach of its earlier assurance not to engage in such advertisements by broadcasting them or publishing them.
Gautam Talukdar, an advocate representing yoga guru Balkrishna and company, said “the court concluded the contempt proceedings based on Ramdev’s undertaking”.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has petitioned the Supreme Court that is currently hearing for Patanjali Ayurveda’s involvement in smear campaign against coronavirus vaccination drive and modern medical practices. It previously made a commitment never to release such misleading Ads but later breached this agreement.
The above false claims attracted a temporary ban on such adverts by the Supreme Court during February 2023 which also issued contempt notices to Patanjali Ayurved and Balkrishna.
A public apology from both the founder of the firm as well as from him himself were issued through numerous paper articles, asking for pardon from courts. He also apologized at a press conference he held on November 2023 after Patanjali Ayurvede was already held to have been censured by the court.
